Pentagon Ready To End DADT

The reports are all over the internet from news media in the US,  that The Pentagon is all  set to announce later today that the ban on gay people openly serving in US military is to end, officials say.

Defence Secretary Leon Panetta is expected to certify the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT), seven months after the law was overturned in the Senate.   After the repeal, the Pentagon had asked for time to prepare troops for the arrival of openly gay colleagues.  The ban officially ceases 60 days after certification and the certification signals that President Barack Obama, Defence Secretary Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen have officially confirmed that the military is prepared.

Earlier this month however, a San Francisco federal appeals court ordered the military to immediately halt "don't ask, don't tell," prompting the Justice Department to file an emergency motion saying ending the policy now would pre-empt the orderly process for rolling it back.  In response to the motion, the Obama administration told the court of appeals last week ordered the military to temporarily continue the policy.

"This Pentagon certification received by the White House this afternoon is welcomed by gay and lesbian service members who have had to serve their country in silence for far too long," SLDN Executive Director Aubrey Sarvis said in a statement.
