As the weather cools down in many parts of the country, people are pulling their winter coats out of storage and turning up the heat in their homes. But what about those who have just the clothes on their backs—and who have nowhere to call home?
Tragically, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teens find themselves in that very situation every single day. Each year, these young people gather the courage to come out to their loved ones—only to be thrown out of their homes or runaway out of fear and despair.
As a parent, I can’t understand those who would kick out their own kid simply because they are gay or transgender. Your child is a part of you, throwing them out on the street is like ripping out a part of your own soul.
No child should ever be homeless, especially when they have a family that can give them the love and acceptance that they need. As tough as it may be for parents to come to terms with their kid’s sexual orientation or gender identity, imagine how much tougher it is for a young person to survive on the streets, all alone.
In our latest video ( YouTube | Website), Susan Sarandon, Alan Cumming, Pete Wentz, Rebecca Romijn and Eden Riegel join me in calling attention to youth homelessness, an issue that is all too common in the United States. Even having one teen on the streets is one too many. But if we work together, maybe we can start doing something about it. After you watch the video, please share it ( Facebook | Twitter) with everyone in your life and let them know about this epidemic.
All my best,
