Malaysian Police Halt Gay Festival

GAY PRIDE PARADE
Social taboo: Police in Malaysia have banned a gay rights festival after complaints from Muslims and other groups, saying it would "create disharmony".  Picture: AFP AFP
MALAYSIAN police have said they will prevent an annual gay rights festival, angering event organisers.
Organisers of the festival slammed the move yesterday as proof of the repression homosexuals face in the socially conservative Muslim country.
Deputy national police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said the decision to halt the three-year-old "Seksualiti Merdeka" (Sexuality Freedom) festival set for November 9-13 came after Muslims called for it to be banned.
"Police will take action... to prevent any function relating to the programme," Mr Khalid was quoted as saying by the national Bernama news agency.

Taiwan could lead the way on gay rights.

Last week, a group of university students praised Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen for her stance on gender equality, specifically pointing out for admiration Tsai's promises to protect gay rights. It is of course, election season. Politicians invariably pander to voters by making pledges that are only sometimes carried out. But Tsai may not have ulterior motives. After all, “pandering” to the gay community might not exactly be a vote-getter. Gay people likely make up less than 10 percent of the population and the percentage of local voters with reservations about homosexuality almost certainly outnumber gay voters. Not much is known about its proposals, but the DPP has promised to release a more detailed “white paper” on the subject of the promotion of gay rights before the January presidential election.

China's Gay Community Fights Online Censorship

When the Beijing LGBT Centre screened a pre-recorded lecture on gay-themed movies last year, the venue was so packed that latecomers had to jostle for a spot on the windowsills of the rented classroom doubling as their makeshift theatre. This year, reports Time Magazine,  however, a similar event attracted only a handful of people, leaving much of the same room empty. The organizers soon realized their online announcements never reached the community. Soon after, other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) groups reported that their posts were disappearing from Douban, ostensibly one of China's most liberal social-networking websites. They have since banded together to boycott the site.

Thailand’s Got Talent Show Stopper!

Thailand’s Got Talent took a new turn recently when a contestant Bell Nunitta stunned the judges and the audience with a stunning performance.

The very pretty 27 year old sang wonderfully well with a special mix of two songs that she had put together.  She really surprised everyone when she got to that point.

The judges were stunned and,  without wishing to give the game away, it does have a happy ending,  at least so far,  as she got a yes from all three of them.

Watch the video here.

our thoughts are with the people of Japan.

More shocking images from Japan.

As each hour unfolds, the death toll increases and the tales of human suffering multiply. Where or when this disaster will stop, is unknown. It's very much looking like the worst natural disaster of, at the very least, this decade.  Our thoughts and good wishes are with those people,  the people of Japan who have lost family members, loved ones, partners and friends.  Our hearts really do go out to you.
