Openly-gay independent senator David Norris claims he is "confident" about his position in the Irish Presidential race. The news comes after he announced the support of thirteen members of the Oireachtas. He needs twenty to secure a nomination to run for the presidency.
This follows the Irish Times' recent poll which claims he has a quarter of the public vote.
The development is a considerable milestone for Norris, who – earlier this year – claimed he may lose the race because of political sabotage. His concerns came after the re-printing of a nine-year-old interview in which he made various controversial remarks about paedophilia.
During an interview in 2002, Norris told current affairs magazine Magill: "I haven't the slightest interest in children, or in people who are considerably younger than me, advised the UK’s Pink Paper.
"I cannot understand how anybody could find children of either sex in the slightest bit attractive sexually ... but in terms of classic paedophilia, as practised by the Greeks, for example, where it is an older man introducing a younger man to adult life, there can be something said for it. Now, again, this is not something that appeals to me.
"Although, when I was younger, I would have greatly relished the prospect of an older, attractive, mature man taking me under his wing, lovingly introducing me to sexual realities, treating me with affection, teaching me about life."
The comments, which re-appeared in the Irish press in May 2011, were said to have seriously damaged his chances of succeeding Mary McAleese to the Irish presidency.
