US mag Vanity Fair published a rather odd and slightly unfunny and overtly gay article claiming to be a Gay Guide To Glee, season two.
It was a tongue in cheek article, with an overblown style, even so the words did seem a little homophobic, and even included the term ‘fag’ which really upset a whole load of folk over in America, and around the world.
Knowing that by and large it’s main readership is gay they seem rather quick to post a rather half hearted apology.
I would like to apologize sincerely to anyone I offended with the use of the term “fag” (now removed) in this “Gay Guide to Glee” column. As an openly gay writer writing in an overtly overblown style, my intent in using the word in this offhanded way was to continue my consistent efforts to confront and challenge” writes Brett Berk.
“There is a great danger in using what is considered hateful and massive insult by the great majority of gay people, to and about ourselves. It could seem to many that we are giving permission to use the word in a negative, prejudicial and hateful way towards us” Said UK gay writer Jason Shaw, today. “It;s harder to fight against it being used as an insult against us, if we as a community use it ourselves to, well, make fun of ourselves.” he says.
“Calling me a fag, by a gay writer, is akin to Jewish people joking about the holocaust” George, a middle ages gay man told us. “It isn't right, and we should accept it from within and with out the LGBT society” he added
