News from Portugal indicates that gays and lesbians have been rather slow to take up the option of legally getting married in the European nation.
So far only around 21 lesbian and gay couples have married since 7th June when it became legal. There are also only 30 or so scheduled for the rest of this year! Before the law was introduced many predicted a rush of gay weddings from the near 11 million population of the sunny country on the Atlantic edge of the Iberian peninsula.
There has also been a couple of significant changes to the legislation since it came in to force in June. The first being that Portugal now recognises foreign same sex marriages, and the is to do with the relaxations of proof of gender citificates that foreign nationals needed in order to marry in Portugal. This was relaxed as it would seem such documentation is difficult to arrange, especially from countries lacking same sex marriage or civil rights.
One of the countries most famous sons, soccer stud Cristiano Ronaldo has been vocal of his support of gay marriage, during the recent Fifa Soccer World Cup he said "As I am Portuguese, I try to keep myself informed about what is happening in my country, We must respect the choices of each other, because, after all, all citizens should have the same rights and responsibilities."
Although Ronaldo him self is not untouched by gay rumours, especially recently when it was announced he’d paid £10 million for a surrogate mother to have his baby, and has recently been seen partying in New York with Lance Bass!
