New research out this week claims that it’s OK to be gay in football here in the UK ! Yep, according to the research a new generation of British soccer fans would be tolerant towards professional soccer players coming out.
Staffordshire University in England produced and online survey of some 2,000 footie fans and found only 7 % believed that soccer was no place for gays. homosexuals.
“The big surprise was that we got what I suppose you’d call a counter-intuitive response and that was that 93 per cent said they felt there was no place for homophobia in football and it should be stomped out and they felt that it brought shame on football,” Sport Professor Ellis Cashmore and the university said to Reuters news agency, adding “There was a call for greater transparency. A lot of people said they would prefer it if gay footballers came out because they don’t think they would have to put up with that much abuse.”
The research comes off the back of Former Wales rugby captain Gareth Thomas coming out last year “It’s pretty tough for me being the only international rugby player prepared to break the taboo.” he said.
Perhaps this new research will encourage a few more gay sportsmen and women to come out in the not too distant future. It would seem that as a society, we are, on the whole moving forward, in the right direction of equality, of tolerance and acceptance.
