Gay Activist For Brighton Council ?
A gay student activist has been selected to fight for a seat on the local council of my hometown of Brighton!
The news was released this week from the Labour Party who named 24 year old Tom French to stand for the forthcoming council by-election in the town.
Tom has always been a bit of a fighter and activist standing up for gay rights and issues, he protested against section 28 when he was just a school boy and has also campaigned for civil partnerships, equal marriage, same sex adoption and special hate crime legislation.
"I’m proud to be standing as a young openly gay Labour candidate in my home city of Brighton. Labour changed the face of LGBT rights in Britain against fierce opposition from the Tories, but we could have gone further in areas like tackling homophobic bullying in schools, LGBT asylum rights and marriage equality, and I’ll push that agenda," he told reporters. Adding "I’ve spent my life fighting for LGBT equality, my record of activism proves my commitment, and If I’m elected I will be a strong progressive voice standing up for the whole LGBT community in Brighton."
Brighton's population is very mixed and has a very large proportion of gay men and lesbians, so anyone taking a stand for gay issues in the town will receive strong support. I'm sure Tom will do well in the election, which is due to take place on 8th July.
