When Welsh rugby star Gareth Thomas came out as gay to his wife and teenage sweetheart Jemma he feared it would wreck their friendship for good.

But five years since he told her about his true sexuality and a year and a half since he came out publicly, Gareth, 37, says their relationship is as strong as ever.

And she even made sure that what would have been their tenth wedding anniversary did not pass unmarked, comes a report in the UK’s Sunday Mirror.

Gareth says: “Jemma texted me on Wednesday and said ‘happy anniversary’. It was mad receiving that text and realising we would have been married for that long. So much has happened in our lives.

“We still have a good connection and I’m so happy that I’ve been through all this and still have her in my life.

“I genuinely thought I’d lose so much if I came out but it just hasn’t been the case. I’m so glad I was true to myself and did it. We’re both in good positions in our lives now. I’m happy and she’s with a new man. It’s a happy ending.”

The relationship has come full circle since Gareth married Jemma – his “rock” – in 2001 in St Brides Major, South Wales.

During their marriage, which ended in divorce last year, they spoke movingly of their desire to become parents and the heartbreak of her three miscarriages.

But the truth he’d tried to deny – which he says was “like a tight knot in my stomach, always threatening to seep out” – finally became too much on November 4, 2006, after a Wales match in Cardiff.

“It was who I was and I just couldn’t ignore it any more,” he says. “I’d been through every emotion under the sun trying to deal with this.

“You wake up one morning thinking, ‘I can handle it, everything is fine’ and the next morning you don’t want anyone to see your face because you think that if people look at you, they will know.”
