Ugandan Rapist claims UK asylum – on grounds he's gay

Ugandan man who was convicted of raping a 28 year-old woman is asking for UK asylum – on the grounds that he is gay, reports the UK’s Pink Paper.

John Ssewagudde, 21, is currently serving four years for raping a woman in Glasgow last year, but has simultaneously lodged an application for UK residency.   Scottish newspaper The Daily Record claims the former charity worker made the claim while on remand for his crime.  He claims that if he is sent back to his homeland he could be killed.

A source close to the case said told the Daily Record: "Ssewagudde is not gay. He is a chancer who is trying to exploit the situation in his homeland. Essentially he is trying to exploit the headlines from Uganda that have already brought the country international embarrassment.  "Given that he is a convicted rapist of a woman, there is a clue to his sexuality. He has brought disgrace to Ugandans in Scotland and he is dragging out the disgrace with his asylum bid."

The source added: "He is milking the system and the situation in Uganda for all he can. He had been in Scotland for three years but he didn't say anything about his sexuality until he found himself in jail."

At the time of the rape, Ssewagudde was in Scotland illegally after his visitor's visa expired.
