There’s a party still going on in New York city, following the Friday night vote that saw the state become the sixth one to legalize gay marriage.
Yes, in a landmark ruling and display New York become only the sixth state in the USA where gay couples can legally wed, however, just this one state doubles the number of Americans residing in a state equality, at least as far as marriage goes.
The New York Senate have been discussing and debating the issue for a number of hours over the last couple of days and finally on Friday night came the vote that saw them approve the same-sex marriage bill by 33-29 at the New York state Senate building in the sate capitol in Albany.

Supporters of equality and same sex marriage reacted with cheers, jubilations, celebrations. For the gay community this is seen as such an important and pivotal moment in the fight for equality in America.
“I’m thrilled about the news from NY Marriage equality! Every day we get a little closer. What an amazing feeling” Ellen DeGeneres said on her twitter account. Neil Patrick Harris was equally happy, saying “It PASSED! Marriage Equality in NY!! Yes!! Progess!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A Historic night!”
“Could not be more thrilled that gay marriage finally passed in NY. Congrats!!” said The View and HLN presenter Joy Behar. True top pop star and one of the World’s most powerful women, Lady Gaga, who has never been shy in her support of the gay community, of equality said “The revolution is ours to fight for love, justice+equality. Rejoice NY, and propose. We did it”
"I have never be prouder to be a lifelong New Yorker than I am today with the passage of marriage equality," Cyndi Lauper said in a statement, herself a great supporter of not just gay equality, but equality in general, her support is well known via Give A Damn.org.

Before the vote finally came through just after 11pm on Friday, many feared there would not be enough support to pass the bill, in the Republican controlled state, however, some independents and even a couple of Republican’s switched sides to pledge their support and vote in favor of the bill. Senator Stephen Saland, who voted against a very similar same sex marriage bill in 2009, effectively killing the measure stone dead at the time and wielding a massive blow to the national gay rights movement, said "While I understand that my vote will disappoint many, I also know my vote is a vote of conscience," his statement to the AP news agency went on - "I am doing the right thing in voting to support marriage equality."
New York Governor said publicly of his joy and support for the bill and promised same sex New Yorkers could get wed in 30 days time. Governor Andrew Cuomo praised the vote on Friday, saying that "I am always proud to be a New Yorker. Tonight, I am especially proud to be a New Yorker." Many in the bars and clubs, including legendary Stonewall Inn cheered and celebrated such news, with a few popping the question to their loved ones. It’s a joyous scene, a remarkable one and hopefully not an isolated one. The message it sends out to the greater world, for last night the world was watching New York, is one of inclusion, acceptance and equality. A very welcome message indeed.
