Applying for civil unions in Illinois

Gay and straight couples lined up Wednesday as the state of Illinois was set to begin issuing civil union licenses for the first time.
Many Illinois residents say they have been waiting for this moment for years. Some starting lining up at midnight outside of the clerk’s office at Daley Plaza in Chicago.
Illinois legalized civil unions in January. The clerk’s office was scheduled to open at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The first couple in line will receive a free gift package.
