“Don’t ask, don’t tell” hasn’t been officially fully been repealed, however, a gay rights group is already planning a major post-repeal conference, to take place with autumn. The idea is not not only celebrate the end of the law, but also start planning a path ahead.
Officials from OutServe, an association of more than 3,000 gay active-duty troops and veterans, today announced the plans for the Armed Forces Leadership Summit this October, to be held in Las Vegas. The event’s goal is to “help better create an environment of respect in the military with regards to sexual orientation and gender identity.”
Outserve co-director J.D. Smith said officials hope the conference will provide gay troops a chance to build professional networks and share ideas of how to promote respect for homosexual troops. “Building an environment of mutual respect is ingrained in our military values, and as active-duty soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who happen to be gay, that’s what we are working toward,” said Smith, and active-duty servicemember who goes by a pseudonym because of the continuing “don’t ask, don’t tell” law.
