Gay’s To Blame For The Fall Of The Roman Empire
It’s causing a stir all over Europe, gays were to blame for the fall of the Roman Empire, or at least that’s what one top Italian academic believes. The statement has caused outrage both in and out of the academic population, after stating the collapse of the Roman Empire was due to gays, who he says “have no place in the kingdom of God”.
Roberto De Mettei, is the vice president of the Centre for National Research in Italy, and claimed: “The collapse of the Roman Empire and the arrival of the Barbarians was due to the spread of homosexuality. The Roman colony of Carthage was a paradise for homosexuals and they infected many others.” The devout Roman Catholic, added: “The invasion of the Barbarians was seen as punishment for this moral transgression. It is well known effeminate men and homosexuals have no place in the kingdom of God”
“Homosexuality was not rife among the Barbarians and this shows God’s justice comes throughout history.”
The professor’s outrageous comments have been condemned by politicians and gay rights groups, both in Italy and elsewhere. Some have even called for De Mettei to resign.
Historians have dismissed claims homosexuality could have contributed to the collapse of the empire. Lellia Cracco Ruggini, Turin University’s professor on Roman history, said: “There is no proof Rome had a high number of homosexuals. I can safely say Rome did not fall because it was gay.”
“It’s outlandish, outrageous and utterly wrong” Commentated an incredulous gay rights campaigner, Jason Shaw. “However what can you expect from a ultra religious catholic? Pure and accurate history - not a chance, once again it seems historical facts don't matter to him or the church. It’s not the first time this so called academic has caused outrage and concern, he recently said the devastating Japanese tsunami was “divine punishment”.
