The computer and lifestyle electronic giants Apple are coming under increasing pressure over the last few hours from many within the gay community. The want the giant to ban an iPhone app which steers people away and offers ‘cures’ from homosexuality.
Christian group Exodus International claim prayer can u-turn people’s sexual orientation if they try hard enough and are behind the program, which has sparked global controversy.
Describing the application as app as "free and providing access to current news, information, and resources from Exodus International,"Apple go on to describe the gay-hating organisation as "the world’s largest ministry to individuals and families impacted by homosexuality. With over 35 years of ministry experience, Exodus is committed to encouraging, educating and equipping the Body of Christ to address the issue of homosexuality with grace and truth."
The app, which was released on Tuesday, received a 4+ rating from Apple, which means that it contains “no objectionable content".However, that is subjective, many people really do find it offensive and more than just a little objectionable.
Truth Wins Out on Change.org is fighting back, they want the app dropped and already got 7,300 signatures on a petition on the site.
"This is hate-based initiative of the fanatical religious right intending to brainwash and emotionally destroy gay and lesbian people by coercing them to hate themselves based on their natural sexual orientation." claims one review.
Another said: "What a shameful, deceptive app. What's next, Apple? An app by KKK complete with GPS tracker of nearby black people?"The Exodus International site states that reorientation of gay attraction is possible. The urge people not to so to quick counsellors, however, they do offer specialised ‘re- heterosexualiasation therapies’
“There is little of love and respect for thy neighbour on this so called religious app” Claims gay rights campaigner and write Jason Shaw today, adding, “There is a lot of misinformation and lies in their message of being able to turn people ‘straight’ by prayer and other therapies, it’s positively dangerous. Many people have been harmed by such a preposterous attitude and suggestion by religious leaders, many to the point of years of depression and self hatred to death”
“I am very disappointed in Apple, a brand synonymous with gay fashion, to allow such an app passed their very stringent approval procedure. I’m sure this will upset a vast number of people, many of whom own at least two or three Apple products. I know I for one, will be reviewing very carefully which new smart phone to purchase next week. Before this app was released, it would have been without a doubt an iPhone!”
Max, a 21 year old student told us, “Can you just imagine the outrage on Apple and the net if we, as gay people put out an app that said, hey, come to us, we can turn you gay through prayer”
Apple, we expect better.
