In the UK, the MP for Brighton Caroline Lucas has publicly announced her support for the Football v Homophobia initiative, which aims to eradicate gay phobia from football.
The Green Party leader organised a photo shoot with her team to celebrate the upcoming event which is officially marked on 19 February and supported by the Football Association.
The politician’s support also marks the launch of a new website for the campaign, footballvhomophobia.com, which provides news and event listings from all over the world together with photos and information on what supporters can do to fight homophobia in the game.
Events taking place in the UK include a five-a-side football tournament organised by the Mersey Marauders in Liverpool, a GFSN league match in Trowbridge and a football game between Bristol Panthers and Bristol Police.Events abroad include a football match staged by Panteres Grogues in Barcelona, a celebration night organised by The Downtown Soccer Toronto League in Canada and a Spanish football competition in Zaragoza.
Organisers say this year’s stand will be “bigger, better, louder and prouder than before.”
A spokesperson for The Justin Campaign, which is behind the event, said: “Football v Homophobia is as much about having fun as it is about demonstration and protest. We want the world to know that the global LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans) community is as much a part of the beautiful game as anyone else - and if they don’t believe us.... we can give them a good game to prove it.”
