A Polish MP who said he “would gladly watch lesbians” get married but told gay men to “forget” it, has apologised for his remarks insisting he is not homophobic, despite his comments. Now he may face a vast fine for his outlandish comments.
Robert Wegrzyn of the Civic Platform party, responded to a question on civil partnerships from television station TVN24 with the response: “We can forget about gay men, but I would gladly watch lesbians,” as reported by Reuters.
He added: “Human nature, human beings are made in such a way that we should live in a partnership according to nature. If somebody wants to live differently, that’s his problem but he should not flaunt it.”
Women’s rights groups condemned Wegrzyn over his comments and the head of the Civic Platform party, Tomasz Tomczykiewicz, called the remarks “silly” and “irresponsible”. Tomczykiewicz told the PAP agency that Wegrzyn would have to pay a fine.
The politician apologised for what he described as a “joke”.
“I am sorry if this joke insulted anybody because it really could have sounded sexist. That was not my intention,” he told Reuters.
“My views on relationships between two people are unchanging and conservative but this does not mean I am a homophobe or discriminate against anybody... I oppose discrimination against anybody on grounds of sexual orientation.”
Debates continue in the country over legislation to allow same-sex civil partnerships and to allow recognition of married gay couples from other European Union countries.
Poland elected its first openly gay official last year. Krystian Legierski was elected to the Warsaw City Council from the city’s Mokotow district in the 21 November election.
