Pair jailed for homophobic killing

The homophobic murder of Ian Baynham shocked the UK in September 2009.    This week, two young people were jailed for killing him in a horrible and appalling homophobic hate crime/

62 year-old Ian Baynham of south east London was attacked in September 2009.   Joel Alexander, 20, and Ruby Thomas, 19, repeatedly stamped on his head whilst he lay unconscious and they left him to die on the street.

Baynham, who was celebrating his first week with a new employer, he died 18 days after the attack. The pair have been jailed for six and seven years respectively by the The Old Bailey in London this week.

According to a report by the BBC Judge Richard Hawkins increased Thomas's sentence by a year because of the homophobic nature of the attack.

Stonewall's Ben Summerskill said: "We welcome the extension to the sentence for Ruby Thomas recognising that this terrible killing was homophobic.

"If Britain's schools continue to fail to tackle homophobic bullying then there's a risk we'll continue to see this sort of incident on our streets."

“Personally I feel the sentences are a little too short,   these animals took a human life in such a horrific manor.   However, the judge seems to have taken note of the homophobic nature of the attack and increased the prison term,  which should be commended”  Said UK gay rights commentator Jason Shaw.
