A "Grotesque act of selfishness" is how Andrew Pierce, the consultant editor of the UK's Daily Mail Newspaper, dubbed by many in the gay community as the Daily Hate mail for it's prejudice and homophobic editorial stance. In his column Pierce criticises the decision of Sir Elton John and David Furnish to have a surrogate baby, despite being both gay and adopted himself.
Mr Pierce wrote: “I have no doubt of the couple’s ‘over whelming’ happiness and joy at the arrival of their son. I am quite certain that the child’s unorthodox parentage — he was born to an unidentified surrogate mother who had carried the child after being implanted with a donor egg from another mystery woman — will prove no barrier to the love the couple will lavish on him.
“Yet I can’t help feeling that his decision to become a father is another grotesque act of selfishness from Sir Elton, and that the child is a little Christmas bauble he and his partner have awarded themselves. How telling it is that he was born on Christmas Day.”
Mr Pierce comments and indeed sentiments seem to follow the newspapers anti-gay rights editorial policy, and that of Christian fundamentalist Stephen Green, who was interviewed by BBC news for their 6pm newscast, in which he said 'Sir Elton’s child is a “designer accessory” for the pop star'
Mr Pierce whilst doesn't go along with Green's views that homosexuals should be executed, he does call himself a Christian, and has previously written against gay equality.
In reality Sir Elton will be 79 when his son turns 16.
Mr Pierce claimed that Sir Elton wouldn’t have been allowed to adopt a child due to his age, so paid to create his own.
“How can we ever hope to live a life of equality free from hate and prejudice from heterosexuals when we get such hateful statements from within the gay community, especially those with a position of power.” Said gay rights campaigner Jason Shaw today from his home in Brighton. “what Mr Pierce fails to see is that his comments will be taken by the already homophobic Daily Mail readers as fact and tarnish all adoptions and surrogacy births by and for gay couples as “Grotesques” Sighing, “He does a great disservice to the wider gay population by such a column”
