German film Sasha, directed by Dennis Todorovic won the Best Film Award at the 8th edition of Basque gay cinema festival Zinegoak 2011 on Sunday, January 29th.
The film tells the story of a young gay pianist, Sasha, confronted with the everyday prejudice of his homophobic immigrant family who struggles with his urge to come out.
I shot my love, by the Israeli director Tomer Heymann was awarded with the Best Documentary Feature Film while the Best Fiction Short Film award was for Elige siempre cara, by the Spanish directors Alfonso Cortes and Juanjo Lopez.
Lesbianism and Genre Award -granted by the Equality, Cooperation and Citizenship Area of the Council of Bilbao- was for the South African production Difficult Love, directed by Meter Goldsmid and Zanele Muholi.
This year's edition awarded Agustin Almodovar and Esther Garcia, from El Deseo productions with the Honorary Prize. The jury was formed by journalist and documentary producer Anna Boluda, screen writer and film director Mikel Rueda, and film director and organizer of Asian Hot Shots Berlin festival, Laura Coppens.
