Vancouver police have arrested four men for recent attacks in which they say the victims' sexual orientation might have been a factor, reports The Province.
Two Richmond brothers have been arrested following a violent assault on a gay couple on June 12, police spokeswoman Const. Jana McGuinness said Thursday.
David Holtzman and Peter Regier were walking home when they saw two drunk men, one of whom was urinating on the couple's east Vancouver building.
The pair asked the men to stop, but were instead met with taunting homophobic slurs and violence, police say.
Parminder Singh Peter Bassi, 30, is charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm; Ravinder Robbie Bassi, 27, is charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm,
"These arrests came after an intensive two-week investigation," McGuinness said, adding that police were able to identify the brothers from public tips and video-surveillance footage.
The Bassi brothers were arrested Wednesday at their Richmond home and have since been released on bail.
"It was investigated as a hate crime," said McGuiness.
In a separate and unrelated incident, police have also arrested two Vancouver men in relation to a possible hate crime early Thursday morning.
A 30-year-old Vancouver man is recovering from facial injuries after he was attacked near Davie and Burrard streets at about 2:45 a.m.
The victim and some of his friends passed by a group of men and women on the sidewalk.
"Suddenly, one of these men punched the victim, knocking him to the ground. While he was down, more blows were rained down on him [by a second man]," McGuiness said.
"Disturbing comments were made about the man's sexual orientation while he was being punched."
The two attackers then fled on foot but were arrested moments later in the 1100-block
Davie Street and charged with assault causing bodily harm.
