The Australian Labor politician told Aussie Network 10 "On the issue of marriage I think the reality is there is a cultural, religious, historical view around that which we have to respect," today.
"The party's position is very clear that this is an institution that is between a man and a woman." and she said that she supports the party view. Wong, is first openly homosexual cabinet minister in an Australian government and although she said she was proud of what the party had achieved in recognising the value and importance of same sex relationships, she doesn't believe in gay marriage.
Various reforms had been made during Labor's first term of government, including the changing of 80 pieces of legislation to remove commonwealth discrimination. However Senator Wong has many times previously dodged the issue by telling media her personal perspective was not relevant!
Her stance is likely to anger many within the gay rights movement in Australia, who have been pushing hard for equality and gay marriage rights recently.
