There's never been a better time to be a Gaygler than right now as internet giant Google announce yet another benefit for some of it's 20,600 staff. Yesterday saw Google was due to begin covering a cost that gay and lesbian employees must pay when their partners receive domestic partner health benefits, which is largely to compensate them for an extra tax that heterosexual married couples do not pay!
The increase will be backdated to the start of the year and will on average save gay and lesbian employees with domestic partners just over $1000 each year. This puts same sex couples on an even footing with heterosexual employees whose spouses and families receive health benefits. Now it's not clear how many of the 20,600 Google staffers are going to get the extra, but the internal gay group, who allegedly call themselves Gayglers has something in the region of just over 700 members!
It's going to cost Google a fair amount each year, but as their head of what you and I would call HR, but they call people operations said it's not all about money “If you were to add it all up, it’s not like we are talking hundreds of thousands per employee,” he said. “It will cost some money, but it was more about doing the right thing.”
But then again, Google is well known for being a fair and generous employer, with some pretty incredible benefits like, free food, free massage, free laundry, free bike and electric car hire, free time to do your own thing and a stonkingly good five months fully paid maternity leave!
If only more employers could follow Google's lead!
