A BURTON rugby fan is seeking to tackle the taboo between homosexuality and playing sport by setting up a Midlands rugby team — especially for gay men.
Richard Potts, of Barleyfields, Horninglow, is appealing for potential players and would-be committee members to come forward to help kickstart a rugby club for the gay community.The 32-year-old believes many young people struggle to combine their sexuality with playing sport and, as an avid Leicester Tigers fan, he believes the Midlands are lagging far behind when it comes to championing gay sports teams.
He said: “There are already teams in London, Manchester, Bristol, Cardiff and Newcastle.
“And with Birmingham, Nottingham, Derby and Leicester all in the vicinity I think there must be people, like me, who enjoy rugby but have put it on the backburner owing to their sexuality"
