Bradford Gay Bashing - Police Seek Help

The Police in are appealing for witnesses after a mob of fifteen  attacked two gay guys in the West Yorkshire city of Bradford, last week.

This gang viciously  attacked the two men, 21 and 37, with sticks and other items taken from a skip on Heap Lane, in the  Barkerend area at around 7.30 last Thursday.

By all accounts so far, these two guys had done nothing to instigate such a horrific gang like attack and were simply on their way to the train station,  heading home to Keighley.     the two men had visited a friend in Undercliffe and were first  verbally abused when they left a local store.  They were then  then chased and assaulted by the group of 15.  They were treated at nearby Bradford Royal Infirmary, for what is said to be numerous 'head' wounds.

“This was an unprovoked attack on two gay men walking towards the city centre,” said Detective  Inspector Ian Bryar of Bradford South Police.  He continued  “Because of the language used by the group towards the victims I believe that this attack was based on the men’s sexuality and is therefore being treated as a homophobic hate crime.   West Yorkshire Police takes this incident very seriously and detectives are investigating this offence now. We will not tolerate people being targeted or singled out due to their sexuality. The victims are both very shocked and upset not just by their physical injuries, but emotionally too. To be targeted in this way has left them confused and disappointed.”

Police are urging anyone who might have information to come forward,  either directly to them  0845 6060606 or via the Crimestoppers line  0800 555 111, where information can be given anonymously.

“I know that one of the victims visited a shop in Heap Lane immediately before the attack. There were many people in the shop at the time and I am appealing for these people to come forward and speak to detectives if they have any information that could help us with our inquiries,” said Det Insp Bryar.

This is an outrageous and unprovoked attack in an already troubled,  rundown city,  that defies reasonable understanding.  Pockets of disaffected and disconnected youths often roam and congregate in the city,  which has a huge Muslim  population and has previously been the site of racial fighting and riots over the years.
