It's a hung parliament after the UK's election, no one single party in control, it's exciting times, although very uncertain, as a nation we're looking at the prospect of much change, some good and some not so good. However, a recent mini-poll done by the equality charity Stonewall makes good reading. Their latest mini social media poll, which ran on its Facebook and Twitter pages a couple of weeks ago and found that Britain is ready for an openly lesbian, gay or bisexual Prime Minister!
Yes, in a rough poll, which had 1073 responses, 59 per cent voted ‘yes, Britain is ready for an openly lesbian, gay or bisexual Prime Minister’ and 41 per cent voted ‘no.’
Ben Summerskill, Stonewall’s Chief Executive, said: ‘Although most people feel Britain is ready for an openly gay Prime Minister, sadly we’re still no closer to getting one. Parliament still chronically under-represents lesbian, gay and bisexual people. For example, there was just one openly lesbian MP in the last parliament. Stonewall recently worked with the Speaker’s Conference to address this and we’ll continue to work with parties to ensure the House of Commons more accurately reflects the people it serves.’
It's a shame that a gay or lesbian Prime Minister here is not looking likely in the near or far future, however, with the current political situation, anything is possible. Personally, I can hardly wait for such a day, although some people say we've already had one - Edward Heath! Ted Heath was Prime Minister back in 1970 to 74 and was a life long bachelor, having no lovers of either sex to occupy Number 10 Downing Street. Whilst Heath always refused to comment on his sexuality, although there were doubts at the time, some people in the party at the time have since said they thought he was gay. So perhaps we're far more ready for a gay Prime Minster, than anyone really thinks.
