Murdered Jack |
The 16 year old's body was found near a cycle path in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, it's believed his throat was slashed. He was a fifth-year pupil at Duncanrig Secondary, and was with a 17-year-old friend in woods known locally as the Misties when they were both attacked. One of Jack's friends, Calum Murray, whose 16 told the paper "We think it has been a homophobic incident. It is absolutely disgusting.
"There's a lot of homophobia in Scotland and plenty of people that would take it further."
Calum added: "Jack and his friend used to go out but I don't know if they still were. They were good friends, though. Jack came out about a year or two ago. He was the nicest guy and so popular. I can't emphasise that enough. He had so many friends, guys and girls. There are thousands of teenagers in East Kilbride but none will be missed as much as Jack. Everybody knew him. Some people were bitchy about him but when they met him they all thought he was great. Jack would never say a bad word about anyone and wouldn't harm a fly. The teenager went on to say how he'd been best friends with murdered Jack for many years, "He was my best friend in first, second and third year and we were still good pals. "He was such a caring guy"
Another friend of Jack confirmed Jack was open about his sexuality, "Everyone knew Jack was gay and it was no great secret, as he had come out to his friends and family"
He died at the scene of the attack, in the Mossneuk area at around 7pm on Thursday, earlier in the day it's believed he had done some shopping for his grandmother, a chore he happily did every week.
The local Police have advised there was "no clear motive" and appealed for witnesses to the horrific crime that has shocked local residents and the country as a whole.
The area where Jack was murdered has a reputation for attracting gangs of youths, where they hang out and some drink or take drugs.
Friends have set up a Facebook group in tribute to Jack, which has already more than 3100 members, with dozens of tributes, including "Stolen from us far too soon. Going to miss you so much. You knew how to live life to the full and you did!" A steady stream of teenagers left flowers, handwritten cards and touching mementos near the murder scene.
The police investigation continues including the possibility that this was a vicious homophobic attack on a young man, with the rest of his life ahead of him.
