Montenegro has announced its first ever march to support gay pride, which will be held at the end of next month.
The Montenegrin government has publicly announced its support for the march and has agreed to contribute two officials to the march’s organisation committee, who are yet to be named.
However, last month the country’s minister for minorities said he was insulted that gays were included with ethnic minorities. Montenegro is known for its rigid conservatism, even amongst the predominantly conservative Balkan countries.
Zdravko Cimbaljevic, of the LGBT forum Progress, a group supporting gay rights in the country said: "We seriously intend to organise the pride, but we lack political support, which means that it is not safe to hold the march.
"We are all under enormous pressure. The circle of people supporting us is unfortunately getting smaller.”
Cimbaljevic has already been subject to abuse in the street and online for his support of the march.
Montenegro legalized gay sex in 1977, however, it’s still does not have any marriage or civil partnership laws for same sex couples.
