A memoir by Cary Grant’s daughter has revealed that the Hollywood star enjoyed the rumours about his sexuality.
In the book, Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, Cary Grant, his only daughter Jennifer Grant writes: "Can't blame men for wanting him, and wouldn't be surprised if Dad even mildly flirted back. When the question arises, it generally speaks more about the person asking.”
"Dad somewhat enjoyed being called gay. He said it made women want to prove the assertion wrong." She admits that her father was always intrigued by the gay rumours, and sometimes even played up the reports on purpose.
Before his death in 1986 aged 82, Grant starred in films such as 1933’s Alice in Wonderland, Operation Petticoat and North by Northwest.
The book comes out in the US next week, and is expected to be released in England during in May
