Last weekend gold medal winning long-jumper Greg Rutherford bravely stripped off for his fans in a life drawing class arranged by Groupon to raise awareness of testicular cancer and support the Male Cancer Awareness Campaign. GT Magazine was invited to put our art skills to the test, and caught up with the Olympian before he popped in to his birthday suit.

Are you nervous about stripping off?
I'm more nervous about how I'm going to look in the drawings. End of the day, in track and field, you have to get your kit off nearly all the time. I jump in a vest and a pair of lycra shorts and at times you can have thousands upon thousands of people staring at you. You block it out, so I'm doing exactly the same thing here. I just hope it's not cold up there [in the studio].
Will you be completely starkers or are you wearing pants?
I'm wearing trunks rather than pants. I've got too bigger quads and bum so we're going with trunks over pants. Don't want anything popping out.
We can’t draw and are slightly worried about offending you…

We always do! So, how important was it for you to get involved with the Male Cancer Awareness Campaign?
Very important for me because I've got a very close friend who's in remission now from testicular cancer, so it's hugely important. Detecting the signs early enough is the key message in making people more aware. Often with blokes they're not particularly keen to, first of all, talk about their bits and bobs, and secondly, go and have someone inspect them. So if guys can figure out the early signs themselves then… it can save your life.

Fine for soccer player's anti-gay tweet.

The UK Football Association has fined a Crawley Town Footballer over a homophobic comment on his Twitter...




A Crawley Town FC midfielder posted a tweet on his twitter account last month reading: “Gays all over the tele what’s wrong with Britain! Sorry I’m #FullyHomophobic.”

This week, Hope Akpan was fined £1,200 after admitting the FA misconduct charge.

Brighton FC calls for more action regarding anti-gay chanting.

The FA need to do more to address homophobic chanting in football grounds, argue fans of Brighton and Hove Albion FC.Many supporters of the club complain they experience hostility because the city is famous for being gay-friendly.

Gay cycling champion Graeme Obree warns gay athletes to stay in the closet

 

Graeme Obree, the cycling champion who came out earlier this year, has warned other gay sportsmen and women not to follow his example.

The 45-year-old athlete, known as the Flying Scotsman, revealed in January that he is gay and said he had twice to kill himself over his struggle to accept his sexual orientation.

Homosexual professional soccer players should not come out because the repercussions could be too devastating, according to Germany captain Philipp Lahm.

"I would not advise any gay professional footballer to come out," Lahm wrote in his autobiography "The Subtle Difference".

"I have no prejudice against the gays, but I wouldn't train with someone who's gay. I have no malice, I don't take our physical contact as (something) sexual. But what if the gay person has that malice of having physical contact with me, of staying there grappling? I would have no problems having a gay student in my academy, but I would rather not train with him."

The petition, with more than 1,500 signatures currently, was started by Philadelphia-born Jerome Hunt, who is a lifelong Phillies fan as well as a former bullying victim.

US Judge Gay Softballer’s Can Be Straight.

 

Strange news from the USA now,    it seems you no longer have to be gay to be on  a gay softball team,  or part of a gay society or group.  A federal judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit filed by three men who claim they were disqualified from the 2008 Gay Softball World Series near Seattle for not being gay enough, reports The Seattle Times.

San Francisco Giants say "It Gets Better"

 

Sport seems top of the agenda at the moment,  with many stories making headline news,  especially in America.    Now,  the World Champion San Francisco Giants have joined the "It Gets Better" Project.

The major league baseball team's video comes on the heels of the uproar after a recent Giants home game against the Atlanta Braves, when a Giants fan accused a Braves coach of spewing gay slurs and threats.

In response to this and other recent public displays of homophobia in sports, gay activist site Change.org used the powers of social media to put pressure on the team with a petition, asking them to stand up against hate and join the cause.

News of the request spread like wildfire over the internet, and over 6,500 fans and other concerned citizens signed the petition.

The video features a number of the Giants' popular players and issues the "it gets better" message in multiple languages.

Inspired by his late uncle, who felt passionate about preventing antigay bullying, 12-year-old Sam Maden has launched a campaign to ask the Boston Red Sox to make an "It Gets Better" video and help fight homophobia in sports, reports Change.org and Advocate.

New research has found that internet forums for football fans are swamped with homophobic abuse, reports the UK’s Pink Paper.

Joakim Noah fined $50,000 for anti-gay outburst

 

He’s a US basketball star, but  Joakim Noah caused outrage after an anti-gay remark to a fan.  Now,  he’s  has been fined $50,000  for calling that  rival fan a “faggot”.

The Chicago Bulls star, whose team lost to Miami Heat in the NBA play-offs on Sunday, was caught on camera saying “fuck you faggot” to the fan.

He apologised yesterday, saying he made the comment in the “heat of the moment” after the fan had said something insulting to him.   The NBA, announcing the fining decision, said it was “for using a derogatory and offensive term from the bench”.

GLAAD called the  incidents “troubling” but praised the NBA for its swift action.

Philipp Lahm, is the star player for his club side Bayern Munich,  it’s said he’s one of the best full-backs in the world and recently he said it would be "very difficult" for a footballer to be "openly gay".
