The Austrian version of TV hit Strictly Come Dancing is leading the way as far as equality and gay visibility is concerned. They will have the first ever same sex male couple in the history of the show!
Openly gay Alfons Haider, who its been said was the inspiration behind Sacha Baron Cohen’s ridiculous Brüno character, is going to be dancing with professional Hungarian dancer Balazs Ekker in the 6th series of the Aussie version of the show, which starts showing down under in March!
According to The Austrian Times, Haider had previously joked about taking part with a male partner, he said “For me, it won’t be about the gay issue. It should be all about the fun – I’m not the gay Joan of Arc! I’m looking forward to dancing with Balazs.” Thank god he’s not Jone of Arc, she was burnt at the stake! The Strictly Come Dancing format has shows in over 30 countries, yet this is the first time any will have a same sex couple. Although it should be mentioned that Ellen DeGeneres’ wife Portia DeRosi had apparently been asked to do Dances With The Stars over in America a while back!

Oh good for them! (I think)
Someone had to do it eventually.
It's a bit like seeing your first woman Prime Minister or the first Civil Partnership, isn't it?
I mean obviously there are gay ballroom dancers just as they are gay just about everything else! We've just been invisible because the non-gays haven't bothered with us before.
