Objections fly at gay pride billboards

A Schenectady city, New York,  councilman is objecting to a series of billboards promoting gay pride among black men, it’s been reported this weekend.

Councilman Joseph Allen tells the Times Union he believes the posters put "the stamp of approval on a gay lifestyle."

The billboards feature men attending church or playing basketball, along with the slogan "I am gay."   The Albany-based group In our Own Voices says it sponsored the ad campaign to combat the stigma and homophobia of being a black, gay man.

There are now 18 of the billboards in the capital region, plus many smaller ads on bus shelters.  Allen tells the Times Union he is not a bigot,  but   he’s asked a lawyer whether the city could take the billboards down, but was told they were protected by the First Amendment.

If there were explicit, or had nudity or images of sexual relations,  one could perhaps understand his view and objection,  but the posters, according to locals are pretty innoxiously mild.
