Fears of the apocalypse, struggles with repression, and hoards of ex-girlfriends are no match for Supergay & the Attack of his Ex-Girlfriends, a new iOS app that brings a comic-book-style coming-out story to the iPhone and iPad.
Here's the scoop: In the classic form of a Bildungsroman, the app follows Dr. Tom Palmer as he casts off the relics of his square, straight life to embrace the black-and-pink persona of Supergay. Of course it's not an easy journey. The story finds him toiling on a secret cloning project, betrothed to his boss's daughter, but less than enamored with the fairer sex. Though he tries to live a lie, something goes awry in the laboratory (double entendre intended) launching a journey that nourishes self-understanding and unleashes an inner superhero, reports PC mag.
While response to gameplay has been tepid thus far, the game boasts imagination—and a sense of humor. In addition to fighting, sneaking, and racing through boss battles, time contests, puzzles, and mini-games, you'll compete in dance-offs and fend off swarms of cloned ex-girlfriends with your Rainbow Ray (I'm not making this up).
The game also deserves credit for risk-taking. Say what you will about the subterfuge of the superhero genre (holy homoeroticism, Batman), but un-closeted gay characters are more or less missing in action in most comic book games. Forget Gotham, Supergay aims his Rainbow Ray at iOS gaming.
For $3 you can have the first 10 chapters of the Klicrainbow's episodic app. Always quick to cover the hard news, MSNBC deserves a tip of the hat for uncovering the app.
