The ultra homophobic reggae singer Buju Banton has been given a massive ten year sentence in jail for drug offences this week. In court under his real name of Mark Myrie, he was convicted of intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offence and others. Banton was banned from coming to the UK, in the wake of his awful and notorious 1988 hit Batty Boom Bye Bye, the lyrics of which incite shooting in the head, burning and pouring acid over the faces of gay people.
He was nabbed by the FBI back in December 2009 during a drug deal in Florida. The Tampa federal court judge, James S Moody threw out the firearms conviction, saying he accepted Banton was not carrying a weapon and did not know that other men in the drug deal were armed.
Sad news came from the singer’s attorney, David Markus, who uttered the singer of hate filled tunes could be free in as little as six years, allowing for time already served and good behaviour. He also advised that Banton will appeal.
