Anti-gay Republican candidate 'glittered'

In the US a new type of protest is starting to attract a lot more attention,  the acted of ‘glittering’  or getting ‘glittered’   Tim Pawlenty, a US Republican and possible President candidate  was showered with pink glitter at a book signing in San Francisco this week due to his opposition towards gay marriage. It follows a similar incident involving fellow candidate Newt Gingrich earlier this month.

The former Minnesota governor was doused in the glitter and confetti by two members of CODEPINK, an anti-war activist group.   This is a new form of protest – it’s not harmful,  it’s colourful and it grabs the attention.

American news network ABC told how Nancy Mancias and Chelsea Byers emptied envelopes full of the glitter over Pawlenty as he was signing books outside a conference organised by a coalition of health insurance companies.

The protesters confronted Pawlenty saying “Tim Pawlenty, where is your courage to stand?”, according to Politico. Before adding: “Stand for reproductive rights! Stand for gay rights!”

CODEPINK founder Medea Benjamin told ABC News the stunt in San Francisco was planned to bring attention to the candidate’s opposition to gay marriage.

Benjamin said. “This is where people flock around the country to be able to live freely and express themselves as gay and lesbian people.  It’s the place where we respect each other and celebrate diversity and to have Tim Pawlenty be there spewing what we consider homophobic attitudes and non inclusive policies in opposition to gay marriage is an affront to people in the Bay area and around the country who believe in equal rights for all.”

Gingrich suffered a similar fate at the hands of Nick Espinosa in Minnesota earlier this month. The prankster told ABC News: “I invited Newt to feel the rainbow because he decided to bring his anti-gay politics to my state.”

He added: “Newt has a long history of anti-gay politics and has chosen to focus on divisive social issues instead of working to fix our economy.  I don’t think a free will adulterer like Newt has any ground to stand up while telling others who they can and can’t love.”

We at the Rainbow Post applaud their actions,   we wish more people would go out and glitter those politicians who are against gay rights and equality.   We need to stand up and be counted and show that we are not just going to shy away and due when you post hate towards us.
