THE Market Hotel, Melbourne's most famous gay nightclub, will close its doors for good next weekend.
The Commercial Road, South Yarra, club - strobe-lit spiritual home to some, setting for an epic night's dancing to many - has been sold to a group that includes former North Melbourne stars Glenn Archer and Leigh Colbert and two of their friends from Singapore, who are providing most of the financial backing.
The buyers will convert the site into a high-class ''ultra-club'' for moneyed socialites. It will be gay-friendly, but not a gay venue.
