The mission of Ben Speaks is to raise awareness about suicide and to STOMP OUT the use of
self-destructive behaviors leading to this final act. Ben Speaks helps families find support and resources through our C.A.R.E. (Creating Alternative Resources for Expression) program, which empowers our youth to BE the change they want to see in their world.
Ben's Story
Ben was a teenage boy who chose to take his own life. He suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and throughout his life learned many tools to mask it.
He was a boy who wanted to fit in and be loved and accepted by others, to
"be normal". He was sensitive, intuitive, empathic, creative and a kinesthetic, visual learner. He had many gifts including a deep compassion for others.
He and his family experienced Ben's illness alone. Only those closest to him saw, felt and connected to the devastation and challenges that he and his family suffered through. Very few resources and tools were accessible to Ben and his family to help them cope with the challenges they all faced as a result of Ben's illness.

“My family suffered greatly as result of a mental illness that was not supported by our community and society. Our son, Ben, chose to take his life on April 16, 2009. He was just 18 years old. Ben was a creative, authentic, empathic, sensitive, highly intuitive young man and had a lot to share. Had he been given creative channels to direct his high level of energy, perhaps he would still be with us today. I have heard hundreds of stories from other families dealing with similar issues. We would like to create new and innovative solutions to give our children a positive outlet to express themselves and the tools to fully manifest their dreams no matter what challenges they face.” Judy Giovangelo
Judy set up the charity Ben Speaks in her sons name to make a difference, to help others effect and empower young people to be the change they want see in the world. It may not always be easy, the road is long and bumpy, but we can all be the change we want to see.
