The American gay community is pressing President Obama to take a much bolder stance in the battle of gay marriage which is electrifying and dividing states all over America.
They want the president to be strong, to remember, that to a lot of people who voted for him, because of his promise to be fair, to work for equality, comments in the media seem to show that gay Americans want Obama to make a stand in support of gay marriage after the Justice Department filed a brief defending the Defense of Marriage Act.(CBS)
Mr. Obama says he is opposed to the DOMA, which basically prohibits federal recognition of same-sex marriages, and the Justice Department has explicitly stated that the president maintains that position. However, after a district judge said that DOMA was unconstitutional, the Justice Department announced it would appeal the ruling because it has an obligation to defend all federal laws.
Up and down the nation, gay rights advocates and supports think this is wrong.
"The Administration claims that it has a duty to defend the laws that are on the books, despite the President publicly decrying DOMA as discriminatory. We disagree," the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) said in a statement. "And at the very least, the Justice Department can and should acknowledge that the law is unconstitutional."
