British Muslims Proud of Gay Rights

 

British Muslims are more likely to be proud of gay rights than secular Britons,  so says a new poll released last week.     This new  research was conducted by the  YouGov research company for a forthcoming Demos essay collection on Conservative attitudes to race and ethnicity in modern Britain.

 

The poll concluded that almost half of British Muslims agree with the statement “I am proud of how Britain treats gay people” and found that 15 per cent strongly agreed with the statement, while only 8 per cent of secular Brits strongly agreed.

 
This research shows a change in the Muslim population’s homophobic reputation and also marks a huge change in attitude when compared to a 2009 pole by Gallop, which found that that 0% of British Muslims were tolerant towards homosexuality. 

Max Wind-Cowie, head of the Progressive Conservatism Project said: “British Muslims are far more enlightened and proud of our liberal values than they are given credit for.   “Contrary to the argument put forward… British Muslims feel just as comfortable with gay rights and lifestyles in Britain as other groups”

 

“I welcome such research,  all too often we hear stories of discrimination and homophobia from or about the British Muslim community”  Said Jason Shaw today.   “Whilst it’s not saying that the Muslim community fully embraces homosexuality, it does show much more acceptance than in previous years”
